9-May-2012 - Gold Prices Falling Down

Gold Prices in Kerala and all over India are going down due to uncertainties in Eurozone and high demand for dollars than gold. In Kerala, official gold rate according to All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association is Rs.20800 for one pavan (Rs.2600 per Gram, 22Carat) but the jewelleries under them are on strike and closed. The Kerala Jewellers Federation whose jewelleries are all open for business fixed the rate at Rs.21200 for one pavan (Rs.2650 per Gram, 22Carat) and argues this as reasonable rate according to prices elsewhere in India.

9-May-2012 - Jewelleries on One Day Strike

Most of the jewelleries in Kerala will remain closed today as protest demanding presently advised 5% VAT (Value Added Tax) to be reduced to 1%, announced by All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association. The newly formed Kerala Jewellers Federation (KJF) announced they will not be participating in the strike and all their jewelleries (Joy Alukkas, Kalyan Jewellers, Malabar Gold, Riti (Manappuram) etc.) will be opened and fully functional today.

Recent extra excise duty for precious metals advised in budget is withdrawn by Finance Minister. No special tax will be imposed on purchases upto 5 Lakhs rupees. Also the controversial GAAR rules to check tax evasion will be implemented only on 2013.
